University of Munich Hospital selects Brainlab Buzz Digital OR

Only weeks after the release of Buzz™ — the newest Brainlab innovation for the digital operating suite — Brainlab announced today a watershed agreement with the Großhadern Clinic branch of the Hospital of the University of Munich in Germany. A total of 64 Buzz Digital OR systems will equip each of the hospital’s 32 new surgical suites, encompassing all clinical disciplines, with 42” multi-touch displays to ensure optimised system control and improved distribution of information.

“The University of Munich Hospital and Clinics and Brainlab share the same vision of continuously working towards the integration of medical device and IT in healthcare facilities”, said Professor K. W. Jauch, MD, Clinical Director at The University of Munich Hospital and Clinics. “As a result of this foundational integration, data management within the operating room (OR) becomes more intelligent, scalable and flexible. This program will push the convergence of medical devices and information technology. We are confident that this new IP-based approach to establish a digital OR can improve workflows, reduce costs and result in improved patient care.”

Buzz™ Digital OR is a centralised information hub with a full HD 42″ display featuring a multi-touch control interface. This computer- and IP-based system allows for the effective handling of information relevant in the OR. The control interface streamlines and enables intuitive management of medical images and other patient information. With the flexibility to manage video images from endoscope, microscope, etc., communication with other medical devices, and documentation of patient treatment, Buzz simplifies effective management of increasingly complex operating room data requirements.

“We are proud to support one of the most extensive new OR development projects in Europe with our new Digital OR platform”, said Stefan Vilsmeier, Brainlab Founder and CEO. “Brainlab and The University of Munich Hospital and Clinics are strong partners in realising a new approach toward making relevant data accessible in the OR. This installation has the potential to set a standard for the OR of the future.”

The new Brainlab system is not just generating buzz in Munich, but worldwide as well. Among other institutions, Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona, USA, is set to install two Buzz Digital OR systems. Northwest will use each Buzz to control a dedicated neurosurgery suite and plans to install the Brainlab intraoperative CT (iCT). The center will take full advantage of Buzz’ ability to communicate and exchange information seamlessly with Curve™, the latest image-guided surgery platform by Brainlab.

With Buzz, The University of Munich Hospital and Clinics, Northwest Medical Center and other leading institutions are taking steps towards creating state-of-the-art, integrated operating suites with Brainlab solutions.
