A new poll, organised by the BMJ, shows that the provision of clean water and sewage disposal has been a greater medical breakthrough than antibiotics and anaesthesia.
Sanitation obtained 15.8% of the vote, thus beating other medical advances such as the creation of the contraceptive pill and the development of vaccines. Antibiotics came second with 14.5% of the vote, and anaesthesia took the third place.
