Editorial: Moving albumin into the small volume resuscitation era

In this editorial, the authors provide an overview of the history of albumin products and their uses in critical care and address gaps in the current knowledge about fluid resuscitation procedures with albumin.

Adequate comparators for hyperoncotic albumin solutions are discussed, and the results of the SWIPE trial are summarised and put into context in terms of study design, patient population, and relevance of the findings.

Finally, the authors provide directions for future research.
