New Welsh hospital has all single rooms

Plans to develop a new hospital on the site of the former Ebbw Vale steelworks in Wales have been approved by the health minister of the Welsh government.

The £53.7m government-funded hospital is expected to be completed by 2011, and is part of a long term regeneration project of the former steelworks.

Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan is aimed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the creation of the UK’s National Health Service under the then British health minister Aneurin (“Nye”) Bevan.

The new 107-bed hospital will include 96 en-suite single rooms, 11 adult mental health beds, 15 outpatient consulting rooms, a radiology department, a birthing suite, pathology services and a minor injuries unit.

Edwina Hart, Welsh health minister, said:

“Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan will be the first of a new generation of hospitals in Wales to have single en-suite rooms for patients, which will help aid recovery, improve privacy and reduce the risk of infections.

“Blaenau Gwent has some of the worst health in Wales. This new facility will greatly improve access to planned and emergency healthcare close to people’s homes.

“It will bring a range of services under one roof such as outpatient treatment, diagnostics, maternity services, and minor injuries and out-of-hours GP services.”
