Health chiefs have given the go-ahead for a GBP 204m revamp of the country’s largest specialist heart and chest hospital, it has been announced.
The plans for the development of the new Papworth Hospital were approved by the NHS East of England Board and will now go forward to the next stage of the approval process. The new hospital is expected to open to patients by 2013.
The redevelopment involves developing a new cardiothoracic hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, co-located with Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine and leading research organisations.
Health bosses hope the development will provide: improved clinical services; a better over-all experience for patients; more modern, state-of-the-art facilities; and increased research and development capabilities.
Director of finance Steve Clarke said: “The new Papworth Hospital investment is another example of NHS capital investments helping to build greater access to state-of-the-art health facilities for the people of the east of England. It will also help to achieve our goal to deliver the best health service in England, outlined in our vision Towards the Best, together.”
