£170m upgrade planned for hospital

Plans for a massive £170m development around Derriford Hospital in Plymouth have been unveiled.

A 10-year planning blueprint for the Vanguard 2 Programme has been put forward which outlines the modernisation and expansion of the hospital.

The illustrations show how the developers plan to regenerate a 16-acre site adjoining the hospital over the next decade.

If planning applications are approved, the development would include a 625-bay multi-storey car park, a nursery for 100 children and retail units.

The plan also shows the inclusion of public open spaces, extensive landscaping, restaurants, cafés and residential areas, along with public transport links.

The development would link the new hospital entrance to the main road on the high street, Tavistock Road.

Planners hope to provide a “Care Square” to support Derriford’s expansion as well as offering new primary care facilities for the expanding local community.

New retail units, including a supermarket, are planned serve the existing residential area.
