Energy saving humidifiers have been installed at a new purpose-built treatment centre in Ipswich.
The seven devices, from Vapac Humidity Control, will be used to service the operating theatres and recovery areas at the Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust’s Garrett Andersen Centre.
Health chiefs at the centre chose the cost-effective GF40 gas-fired humidifiers because the facility has no central steam generating plant, while standard electrode boilers to cover such a large area would have resulted in higher electricity costs.
The new centre is named after the Suffolk-born Elizabeth Garrett Andersen, who was a pioneering physician, political campaigner and the first Englishwoman to qualify as a doctor.
The £26-million centre is built across four floors and will house departments for accident and emergency, critical care, day surgery and elective surgery.
Vapac said by taking advantage of the advances in technology, the units offer a high efficiency burner and heat exchanger, combined with low flue temperatures.
