RCN to consult members on organ donation

The Royal College of Nursing has today launched a consultation with its members on the future of organ donation.

The consultation addresses all aspects of organ donation, including the option of switching to a system of presumed consent, whereby if a person fails to opt out then their organs would, by default, be available for donation.

The RCN aims to make the consultation as far reaching as possible to ensure all members have an opportunity to have a say.

Submissions will be accepted from individuals, branches, forums, country and regional boards.

Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive & General Secretary said: “This is an important and sensitive issue for the public and for our members, many of whom deal directly with all aspects of organ donation. We need to make sure that their voice is heard in this debate, and I would urge members to participate either as individuals or through their branches.”

The consultation closes on 06 March 2009.
