MRSA-fighting fabric in everyday pyjamas

The fight against MRSA (methicillin-resistant Stapylococcus aureus) has been stepped up thanks to the technology behind the fabric in a new range of pyjamas to be sold in retail stores.

See it SAFE with X-STATIC silver fibre technology is, according to manufacturer Toray Textiles Europe Ltd, a breakthrough fabric that is clinically proven to reduce the risk of MRSA.

The antimicrobial textile has now been introduced into a range of pyjamas made from the fabric which go on sale in stores across the UK belonging to retail chain Marks & Spencer.

See it SAFE is the result of three years of research by the UK-based company to develop a fabric which helps protect against MRSA.

Toray Textiles sales manager Steve Milner said the fabric possessed infection-fighting properties and helped protect those in hospital, the elderly, the infirm and those who may come into contact with bacteria in the community and through their work.

Mr Milner said silver had been used for centuries to heal open wounds and burns. See it SAFE was specifically targeted at the healthcare sector, but also could benefit the pharmaceutical, food preparation, catering and retail sectors

He explained that in September, West Middlesex University Hospital in London, UK, became the first hospital to issue a tunic-and-trouser-style uniform for junior doctors manufactured with See it SAFE fabric.

He said the uniform met the UK Department of Health’s new bare-below-the-elbow dress code, which comes into force in 2008.
