Patient very likely contracted listeria from hospital sandwich

A patient has tested positive for the same strain of listeria that contaminated sandwiches provided to hospitals across London and the southeast of England, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed.

The strain of listeria the patient was diagnosed with is very uncommon and it is very likely that he was infected by an Anchor sandwich.

“We understand from the hospital that the individual recovered from listeria, however he subsequently died from seperate complications caused by the illness that he was receiving hospital treatment for,” a HPA spokesperson said.

The sandwiches were supplied to hospitals in Kent, Sussex, Essex, Middlesex, Surrey and Greater London.
